Atletico Madrid vs Man United: Head to head, history, team news, facts on Champions League tie

Manchester United travel to Spain’s capital to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League knockout stage on Tuesday night.

Just like Chelsea, Manchester United will be hoping to follow Premier League sides, Manchester City and Liverpool who recorded 5-0 and 2-0 victories over Sporting Lisbon and Inter Milan, respectively in their first-leg ties.

Team news:

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side have a number of concerns heading into Tuesday’s clash against the Red Devils.

Their top stars, Antoine Griezmann, Koke and Yannick Carrasco did not participate in a recent training session, while there are doubts about the full match fitness of Luis Suarez.

For Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United, they could welcome back Raphael Varane after the Frenchman returned to the bench for Sunday’s win over Leeds.

Atletico Madrid and Manchester United have only faced each other once in Europe and that was in 1991-92 Cup Winners’ Cup.

Atletico Madrid were victorious in the encounter, knocking them out 4-1 on aggregate in the Last 16.

Manchester United’s only previous visit to Atlético Madrid was in the first leg of their 1991-92 Cup Winners’ Cup tie at the Vicente Calderón.

United’s starting XI for that game had the likes of Peter Schmeichel, Denis Irwin, Steve Bruce, Paul Ince, Bryan Robson and Mark Hughes, amongst others. They were beaten 3-0 by Luis Aragonés’ men.

Diego Simeone’s LaLiga champions have lost each of their last four Champions League matches against English clubs.

Head to head (h2h) history:

Atletico Madrid wins: 0

Man United wins: 1

The round of 16 tie is scheduled for 8pm GMT kick-off time on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022, at the Wanda Metropolitano.
