Former Man United defender reveals interest to comeback to Old Trafford under new management

Jaap Stam has registered an interest in returning to Old Trafford, even if it means working under a new manager.

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has admitted he is open to returning to Old Trafford in “any role” as he is eager to help the club restore its former glory.

Erik ten Hag is the favourite to take over from Ralf Rangnick at the end of the current season, and reports have connected fellow Dutchman, Stam, to join Ten Hag’s coaching staff.

Former striker Robin van Persie and former assistant manager Steven McClaren have also been touted with potential returns.

And Stam admitted he is “open” to a return to United if a role were offered to him.

“In principle, I am open to any role at Manchester United,” Stam told Voetbal Primeur. “I have enjoyed working and living there, and I owe a lot to the club.

“If I can help Manchester United in any way, I’m open to it, provided it’s in a role that suits me.”

This isn’t the first time Stam has voiced his wishes of returning to club, telling bettingexpert last month: “If they would ask me (to take a coaching/managerial role), I would do it straight away without a doubt.

“You know United is my life as well. I’ve had great seasons over there, won trophies and it’s been very important for me. In any way, if I could help them out, I would be tempted to do it.”

United could do with all the help they can get if they wish to challenge for silverware next season. The Red Devils have struggled this term to break into the top four, and currently find themselves seventh on the Premier League table, six points off Tottenham, who are fourth.

Rangnick’s side take on Norwich over the weekend as they look to bounce back from last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Everton, before two all-important away fixtures to Liverpool and Arsenal.
