Speaking about how they managed to outwit Man United in the 1-0 win in the Champions League Round of 16 second-leg game, Diego Simeone said: “I want to make it clear that the team knew what they had to do.
“They (United) have great individuals, they all entered very well but a little messy to generate a high press at the start. We knew we could play with spaces.
“We suffered and once again we are among the top eight in Europe and this is extraordinary for the club after winning the League.”
United started the game sharply, pressing the visitors well and winning the ball, but lost their energy levels and allowed Simeone’s side to get bac into the game.
Atletico Madrid were able to capitalize on United’s vulnerabilities in defending against counter-attacks by scoring a clever goal, even though the Red Devils felt it should’ve been ruled out as Anthony Elanga might’ve been fouled in the build-up.
Madrid were able to get the job done at Old Trafford and the loss means that United will again go trophyless this season.
MEN: Erik ten Hag becomes favorite to take over as new Man United manager
Erik ten Hag is the newest favorite to take over as the next Man United manager, claims Manchester Evening News.
The Ajax boss is the preferred option among the decision-makers at Old Trafford after his impressive work with the Dutch club.
Ten Hag is the prime choice to succeed Ralf Rangnick, but the club are yet to make a final decision and are continuing with their managerial appointment process.
The Dutchman is contracted with Ajax until 2023 and United would have to give a relatively low compensation fee to get him.
The Red Devils believe the negotiation process for Ten Hag could be easier with no Champions League action for Ajax.
Mauricio Pochettino is still being seriously considered for the job, while United refuse to rule out a move for Thomas Tuchel.
The Red Devils ideally want to confirm the appointment of the new manager before the season is over as they want the incoming boss to be involved in the summer transfer activity.
