Modric names one change Ancelotti made to turn result around vs Chelsea

“A defeat that tastes very sweet. We don’t give up until the end. Another historic night at the Bernabeu. Carlo Ancelotti has made good subs that changed the game,” Luka Modric said after the match against Chelsea.

“I can’t describe the game. We were dead. Chelsea have been the toughes opponent.”

Real Madrid have been able to advance to the Champions League semi-finals winning 5-4 on aggregate.

Ancelotti’s subs indeed played a huge role in us being able to come back into the tie after being 3-0 down. First, Rodrygo scored to make it 3-1, and then Eduardo Camavinga won the ball that lead to the goal from Karim Benzema (3-2). Both players came in the second half.

Benzema 8.5, Camavinga 7.5: rating Real Madrid players in Chelsea clash

Karim Benzema — 8.5

The Real Madrid striker came in clutch once again, scoring the goal that sent us to the UCL semi-finals in the extra time. Since we had a defensive approach, Benzema didn’t interact with the ball too much, but he got the best out of almost every situation.

Besides, Karim was useful defensively and was spotted pressing the opponent late in the game despite seemingly suffering pain.

Eduardo Camavinga — 7.5

The youngster entered the game perfectly, as he played a huge role in turning the tie around. It was Cama that won the ball prior to Benzema’s goal. The midfield was very good defensively and helped in possession too.

Luka Modric — 7.5

To play 120 minutes at 36 years old is in itself a miracle, but to do that in the manner Modric did is something for the history books. Luka brought us back into the game with an superb outside-the-foot assist to Rodrygo late in the second half.

He also put in a lot of work at the back and was accurate with his passes.

Toni Kroos — 6

Not the best night for the German midfielder. Kroos didn’t do too good of a job defensively and lost quite a few balls, which can be very dangerous when you play in his position. It made total sense that he was the first player to be subbed off.

Nacho — 4

Nacho is not a regular starter and it shows. Two of the conceded goals came from his area as he got caught outside of position twice. His passing was okay, but there little to praise him for beyond that. Even with Dani Carvajal at centre-back we looked better.

Others: Courtois — 6.5, Carvajal — 5.5, Alaba — 6, Mendy — 5, Casemiro — 6, Valverde — 6, Vinicius — 6.5, Rodrygo — 7, Marcelo — 6.5, Vazquez — 6, Ceballos — n/a.
