‘It shows our mentality’: Mount on Chelsea maintaining pace through off-pitch crisis

Chelsea are going through a dark period. Their operations are limited, the owner is sanctioned and the club is up for sale.

Yet this uncertainty does not translate to poor form on the pitch. Quite the other way around, as the Blues are on a six-game game winning streak.

“We have that winning mentality in the group,” Mason Mount said after the Boro win.

“Any game, any competition, we want to win. Cup or league, we give it everything.

“It’s been a tough couple of weeks, but we are focused and ready to play.

“It shows our mentality. There is a lot going on around us. But within the group, we have so much focus, try to block out what’s going on around us.”

Mount 9, Ziyech 8.5: Rating Chelsea players in Boro win

Mason Mount: 9/10 – Was asked to play in a free role and often drifted to the right to combine with Ziyech. Mase ripped Boro’s defence apart with his movement and passing, providing a brilliant assist to Lukaku early in the game.

Mount was active throughout the game, wreaking havoc on Boro’s defence and pulling the strings up front for Chelsea. Reached 50 goal involvements (25 goals + 25 assists) for Chelsea with his two assists today.

Hakim Ziyech: 8.5 – The birthday boy was on fire today, playing a huge role in Chelsea’s first goal and then scoring a stunner.

Thiago Silva: 8 – Effortlessly magnificent. The Brazilian played a brilliant pass to Ziyech to launch an attack that led to Chelsea’s first goal. Rock-solid at the back.

Romelu Lukaku 8 – Kept his cool to score Chelsea’s opening goal. Used his strength and aerial ability to help Chelsea defend corners. Another positive side of his game today is that he was involved in the build-up, linking up well with Mount and Ziyech.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 7 -Spotless at the back. Supported Ziyech and Mount on the right, often pushing forward to help the attacking effort.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek: 7 – Did well under pressure apart from one episode in the first half when he was dispossessed near Chelsea’s box. Made a lot of driving runs through the middle, carrying the ball into the final third for Mount and Ziyech to do their magic.

Christian Pulisic 6 – Definitely not a performance to remember. It wasn’t particularly bad, it’s just he wasn’t particularly effective on the left today.

Malang Sarr 5.5 – Boro barely threatened Chelsea today but when they did, they did it from their right-hand side, where Sarr played. A bit shaky at the back. Also slow and indecisive in possession, making too many touches and slowing down Chelsea’s attacks.

Others: Mendy, Rudiger, Kovacic, Kante 6.5; Werner 6, Kenedy, Vale N/A
