Mendy and Christensen 1: Player ratings as Chelsea lose to Madrid

Chelsea lost 1-3 to Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge, with Karim Benzema scoring a hattrick and Kai Havertz getting one goal back for the Blues. Here are our player ratings for the game.

Edouard Mendy – 1

I can’t remember a worse performance from the goalkeeper, who is usually a calm and cool figure. Mendy could have done better for both of Benzema’s headers but him gifting the goal away in the second half effectively derailed Chelsea’s plan. A night he will never want to remember again.

Andreas Christensen – 1

The centre-back played as if his mind is already in Barcelona. Poor at tracking back, positionally dumb and simply an all-around disasterclass. Subbed off at half time.

Kai Havertz – 7

The silver lining was Havertz continues to impress as the striker. Another big goal from him and he was lively in the final third, creating a couple of decent chances for his teammates too. Looked like the only player fighting for the Chelsea shirt tonight.

Thiago Silva – 4

Could have done way better for Benzema’s second goal and Silva, usually so confident, looked unsure of himself at times.

N’Golo Kante – 5

Kante was subbed off too and to be fair, it was an average game from the midfielder. He was all over the field but his passing wasn’t the best and he could have done more off the ball like he usually does.

Romelu Lukaku – 2

He came on late to try to salvage something but missed an open header and was slow to get on the end of a couple of crosses. Nothing is going right for Lukaku at the moment.

Mason Mount – 3

Mount picked up pace during the final 20 minutes but his impact on the game was negligible. Clearly, him in a front three does not work.

The rest: Rudiger 4, James 4, Jorginho 5, Kovacic 5, Pulisic 3, Loftus-Cheek 4

Lukaku lets out frustrated shout after missing sitter

It goes from bad to worse for Romelu Lukaku. Brought on to change the game, the striker missed a great chance to cut the lead down to one against Real Madrid.

Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross was met by Lukaku but he headed it well wide of the goal from point-blank range, letting out a shout of frustration afterwards:
