Werner showed more strength coming from bench; Rating Chelsea players in Brighton draw

Hakim Ziyech scored to give Chelsea the lead in the first half but it was a lacklustre performance from the Champions League winners as they escaped Brighton with a 1-1 draw. Let’s take a look at how the players performed:

Player ratings

Marcos Alonso: 1/10

There wasn’t a worse player on the pitch tonight. Alonso was very slow, often out of position, can’t defend a 1v1 situation and even his crossing has declined. Chelsea simply cannot go for any big title with him starting in this form.

Mason Mount: 3/10

What has happened to him? It’s a wonder Mount was on the field for 90 minutes but he was barely involved in the build-up and seems like a shadow of his usual self. Decent work rate but that’s about it as his passing was poor and he couldn’t get into the game at all.

Callum Hudson-Odoi: 1/10

A poor shot was the highlight of his game. Hudson-Odoi was indecisive with the ball at his feet and usually good off the ball, he seemed to lack any movement tonight whatsoever. We’re not sure he should start in the next game but that decision is for Tuchel alone.

Thiago Silva: 7/10

The only Chelsea player who can hold his head up after this game. Silva passed well, defended a few Brighton attacks brilliantly and the game could have been way worse if not for him. The others need to step up to reach his world-class level.

Cesar Azpilcueta: 2.5/10

Azpi has definitely declined this season. While still a reliable 1v1 defender, his lack of pace and his worsening offensive abilities are an issue.

Romelu Lukaku: 4/10

He had one good shot but apart from that, Lukaku cut an isolated and sorry figure in the attack. His movement was terrible and he had only 8 touches in the first half! Another night to forget for the striker who could not impact the game at all.

The Rest: Kepa 6, Rudiger 5, Kante 5.5, Jorginho 4, Ziyech 6. Subs: Werner 8, Havertz and Kovacic 5.5
