Referee Marciniak made a lot of dubious decisions in Chelsea’s 3-2 victory at Real Madrid. For example, he ruled out Marcos Alonso’s goal on VAR review, judging that the Spaniard handled the ball before scoring.
But it’s not this decision that left Thomas Tuchel infuriated. It’s Marciniak smiling and joking with Ancelotti after the game.
“I was disappointed that the referee had a good time with Carlo,” Tuchel said.
“When I wanted to go and say thank you, he was smiling and laughing with the opponent’s coach.
“I think this is the very wrong time to do this after the final whistle, 126 minutes of a team giving their heart.
“When you go and see a referee smiling and laughing with the other coach, it’s bad timing. I told him this.”
‘Disappointed and very proud’: Tuchel reacts to Madrid tie defeat
“We are very disappointed and very proud as well,” Thomas Tuchel said after the Madrid game which ended in a 5-4 loss on aggregate.
“We were unlucky. That is why we are disappointed. We got beaten by individual quality and conversion.
“We made two mistakes, two ball losses. We deserved to go through after this match today. It was not meant to be.”
Chelsea created a lot of chances, both in the first and the second legs, but were not clinical enough to finish them.
At the same time, they conceded way too easily, leaving gaps at the back for Benzema and Rodrygo to score.
