Tuchel finally addresses Lukaku struggles ahead of Lille clash in new technical advice

During a press conference ahead of the Lille game, Thomas Tuchel was asked if Romelu Lukaku’s poor form is related to injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

Chelsea had to change their approach after the injuries to the leading wing-backs, often switching to a four-at-the-back approach.

“Maybe both. Every style changes with long-term injuries of players,” Tuchel said.

“We played the majority of games with wing-backs. Two of the key wing-backs, Reece and Chilly, got injured at peak level.

“They have a huge impact defensively and offensive. Regarding Romelu, offensively, penetration and delivery. We are not the only team where players have a huge impact, wing-backs are a crucial position to influence the game.

“But still we can also play and win with any player. This is our job, this is what we try when we have injuries. It’s on us, me to adapt, to find solutions. Romelu will always be part of the solution.”

Lukaku has scored just 3 goals in 10 games in 2022. He has been widely criticised by fans and media for his poor goal return and disastrous performance against Crystal Palace last weekend.
